Summer can bring with it various challenges to our health, such as dehydration, heat stroke, sunburn, and other heat-related illnesses. Here are some tips to protect yourself during the summer:
Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water and other fluids such as coconut water, lemon water, buttermilk, and fresh fruit juices. Avoid caffeine and alcohol, which can cause dehydration.
Dress appropriately: Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing made from breathable fabrics such as cotton or linen. Wear a hat or use an umbrella to protect your head and face from the sun.
Stay indoors during peak heat hours: Avoid being outdoors during the hottest part of the day, typically from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you need to be outdoors, seek shade or wear protective clothing.
Use sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 before going outside. Reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating.
Eat light and healthy: Eat light and nutritious meals that are easy to digest, such as salads, fruits, vegetables, and grilled or steamed dishes. Avoid heavy, oily, and spicy food.
Keep your home cool: Use air conditioning or fans to keep your home cool. If you don't have air conditioning, keep windows and doors open, use shades or curtains to block the sun, and use a fan to circulate the air.
Exercise in the morning or evening: Avoid exercising during peak heat hours. Choose the morning or evening when the temperature is cooler.
Be mindful of heat-related illnesses: Know the symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, such as dizziness, nausea, headache, rapid heartbeat, and confusion. Seek medical help immediately if you experience any of these symptoms.
